Anthology submission, part 3
From pencils to inking to color.
Here’s the final part of my process for submitting a short story to the Kids Comics Unite anthology. (Here are parts 1 and 2.)
Pencils
Penciling went by quickly; I’d already made the big decisions and could enjoy fleshing things out. I kept the pencils loose since I do my own inking. It helps that I've been drawing Solaa and Paro for a while (over 45 pages of Solaa's Order in its self-published form).
There’s more I could say about drawing the Quha - especially when it’s used for dueling - that I’ll save for a future post.
Inking
I focused on page 1 for inking and coloring since the submission guidelines only required that one page be finished.
Inking was a mechanical, even relaxing process - mainly tracing over my linework. I added speech bubbles and the final dialogue (which I kept tweaking until the last possible moment).
Colors
Because of the submission deadline, I only had time to put in flat (i.e. base) colors, to show what kind of palette I had in mind. But I’d already thought a lot about the colors of Solaa’s Order, which I’ll discuss in another future post.
And that’s how I created my anthology submission! Since then I’ve gotten great feedback from the editorial team and will spend the next few months completing all the pages. This will include adding shading and highlights, like in this example:
Stay tuned for my work-in-progress and other updates!
